Proposal: a ban on trash-talking your work

Here's an idea nicked off a poetry workshop I went to once: how about a moratorium on presenting one's work with any sort of apology/self-deprecating remarks/insults? I mean, I am the sovereign queen of this, but I think it'd be cooler if we shared our writing without doing the usual "I know this is rubbish and will burn your eyes out with it's dreadfulness..." dance before we do. What do you lovelies think?

Excellent idea. I think this applies to everything really. And the funny thing is, I notice when other people do it (as part of my job I give feedback to others quite a lot) but I can never stop myself.

I resolve to stop apologising for my work before I even know what anyone thinks of it. And maybe that'll mean I can post an extract up sometime...

Please do!

And you're quite right with your first point, it does, and I am making a right effort to stop that in my life. Tricky, even if I blurt out to someone that I'm doing NaNo ("You're doing what-now?"), I then go into a big speech about how I'm no writer, it's just a bit of fun, etc etc. It's really ingrained in us, this apologising-for-ourselves habit.

Yes. Good plan. It's such a weird defense mechanism. "Don't bother criticising, I've already said it sucks" can really deprive yourself of helpful, constructive advice.
